Josh’s story

Josh from Waterford, is a very happy 12 year old boy who lives with complex medical issues. We have no idea what the future may hold, but Josh’s Wish gave him an experience of a lifetime and memories that the family will treasure, forever.

“Josh is a happy 12-year-old boy who has complex medical issues. Josh battled Meningitis and Scoliosis as a baby. At the age of 2 years Josh was diagnosed with a rare brain malfunction called Pachygyria. It affects his speech and mobility. He requires a lot of physio, speech therapy and occupational therapy. He relies on a wheelchair. There is not much known about his condition but that it has limited life expectancy. As part of his condition Josh developed Epilepsy and was recently diagnosed with a rare potassium-based gene KIF2A, affecting his muscles and his eyesight. As a result of this we are limited to going anywhere with Josh.

Josh has two brothers and two sisters. It was Nicole, his older sister, who came across Make-A-Wish.

We sent in the application and to our complete surprise we were successful in the application. Josh has limited vocabulary, but he loved watching Mickey Mouse’s Clubhouse on the Disney Channel. Therefore, we thought that Josh’s one true wish would be to go to Disneyland to meet Mickey Mouse in person. This would also give him an opportunity to spend time with all the family together and create magical memories.

The treatment we received from Make-A-Wish was second to none. Every single aspect of the trip was organised for us, even overnight accommodation in Dublin the night before we flew out to Paris.

The whole holiday was pure magic for Josh. The highlight being getting to meet Mickey Mouse for lunch!! The look on Josh’s face was so memorable. Thankfully we captured it on video for him. Two years on, Josh still loves to sit down and watch his wish being granted. He tells his career, Patrick, about Mickey Mouse.

Make-A-Wish has made a huge impact on us all as a family but especially on Josh. He has been through so much in such a short space in time and we have no idea what the future may hold but thanks to Make-A-Wish, they gave Josh an experience of a lifetime and memories that we, as a family will treasure, forever.”
