Denis O’Brien joins well known Irish people to help raise awareness of Make-A-Wish on World Wish Day Make-A-Wish® worldwide will celebrate a global day of wish granting on April 29th. World Wish Day is designed to inspire people all over the world to share the power of a wish and the difference it makes to an entire family. To support awareness of the World Wish Day campaign many celebrated Irish people will share with the nation their nostalgic childhood wishes over the coming days. These childhood wishes have been sent to Make-A-Wish from well known people from all areas of Irish life from sport to music and business to media to raise awareness of the power of a wish.
Business man Denis O’Brien shares his childhood wish to raise awareness of Make-A-Wish on World Wish Day When I was young...“I had a dog called Tutsi and he was a Jack Russell. I wished to bring the dog to school and have him sleep in my bedroom. I wanted him to be with me all the time - my best friend... to talk to and I really felt he knew what I was thinking. I had this permanent dream that my dog could be the most important animal in the world...rescue a child who had fallen into a river, start barking if he saw smoke coming out of a building and alert the occupants to a fire. I suppose I saw the dog as a hero - just like in the comics - who could make impossible things happen...the child's world of everything is possible...get rid of all 'baddies' in the world and just have good people doing good things. I think dogs have a very calming influence on children and I think a young person caring for and minding a dog gives them a sense of responsibility at a young age.”
Every 25 minutes, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition around the world. That’s more than 20,000 wishes every year. Over 240,000 wishes have been granted since 1980. In Ireland over 170 wishes will be granted this year and this solely depends on the amazing generosity of the Irish people.
