Make-A-Wish® worldwide will celebrate a global day of wish granting on April 29th. World Wish Day is designed to inspire people all over the world to share the power of a wish and the difference it makes to an entire family. To support awareness of the World Wish Day campaign many celebrated Irish people will share with the nation their nostalgic childhood wishes over the coming days. These childhood wishes have been sent to Make-A-Wish from well known people from all areas of Irish life from sport to music and business to media to raise awareness of the power of a wish.

Make-A-Wish Ambassador Jonathan Sexton - Irish Rugby star told us his childhood wish:

“When I was a kid all I wanted to do was play for Manchester United. I used to dream of playing in midfield with Keane, Beckham and Giggs in Old Trafford. I used to imagine scoring a goal to win the European Cup and celebrating in front of the supporters with my favorite players like Cantona & Keane. The goal was always a free kick. I would tell David Beckham that I was going to take it and then smash it into the top corner. For all my birthdays I used to ask for the latest Man United shirt. My Mum used to have to hold me down to get it off me when it was filthy, to put it in the wash. I was scared it would shrink or lose its colour. My fondest memory of watching Man United was when they won the European Cup in 99. I was very upset when they were 1-0 down in stoppage time but me and my brothers went crazy when they scored twice to win the game.”

Every 25 minutes, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition around the world. That’s more than 20,000 wishes every year. Over 240,000 wishes have been granted since 1980. In Ireland over 170 wishes will be granted this year and this solely depends on the amazing generosity of the Irish people.
